MAT. MCHUGH / THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS
play an Acoustic gig at Newport Arms Sunset Sessions  ‘Love Come Save Me’
It’s been 10 years this year, since the rise of The Beautiful Girls and for Mat. McHugh - the man at its heart - he’s seen and tried it all. He’s recorded with the band live. He’s recorded with bits of instrumentation from band members. He’s recorded an album by himself and then taught the band how to play it. He has recorded by himself and remained by himself. He’s released under TBG and he’s released as Mat., he’s toured with horn sections and he’s toured alone. And at the end of each and every album - regardless of differences in the process – there has stood the same incredible element, the foundational purpose of the whole damn thing: the unfaltering support and love of those who have come, watched, listened and danced.

Mat. is taking LOVE COME SAVE ME out on the road and will be playing an ACOUSTIC GIG at Sydney’s
most famous pub Icon, Newport Arms Hotel as part of their Sunset Sessions, Saturday 2nd June, 3pm

Every Single Saturday

Every Single Saturday has been playing at the Glen Street Theatre. It is a musical comedy written and composed by Joanna Weinberg.

It is a great idea, four parents on the sidelines during a football season. The parents are from different backgrounds with different issues. It starts at the beginning of the session with three of the four looking forward to what will happen. As the season progresses you learn more about each parent. Maria de Marco plays a fitness freak with a problem with food and is half starving her daughter who plays in goal. Christopher Horsley is the coach, a former footballer himself he lives through his son, trouble is his son hates football and just wants to dance. Scott Irwin enters the stage a little later, he has just moved back to Australia to look after his son. He knows nothing about him, having had nothing to do with him up until now. He is a conductor and has a few issues to overcome in adapting to become a father. His son, of course, is an excellent player and helps turn the Magpies round. Katrina Retallick plays a single Mum trying to do the right thing by everyone but has a hard time being excepted and who's son spending every game running the wrong way up the field! The underlining moral to the musical being that parents have to let their children be what they want to be, rather than making them live the dream that they wanted. The music on the whole is fairly good with some catchy songs. The set was effective, though I did think it was a shame that you couldn't really see the musicians behind the netting.
My general view of this production however, was that I felt I was watching a production for children. The talking Magpie was amusing but childish. Katrina Retallick looked for much of the time as if she was on playschool with over exaggerated facial expressions, it just seemed very false (sorry)! The other issue I had was the opening was very weak, the song, only sung by three actors just didn't pack the punch that the opening of a musical should. There was no chorus and I think that would have helped lift some of the songs.
I did enjoy the way the musical progressed as the characters enfolded and it did keep you entertained.
It will be playing at Parramatta and the Laycock Theatre during March.

Sydney Festival: Parramatta Opening Night

If Saturday night was anything to go by then the artists showcasing at this years’ Sydney Festival are going to blow your mind! The music, the costumes, the characters; oh my!

Despite the on and off bouts of heavy rain, crowds still enjoyed themselves among the myriad of events Parramatta had to offer. Four dedicated stages, a double-decker music bus and various pop-up artists floating up and down Church St; Parramatta was simply bursting with cultural and creative energy. I chose to ignore my map and instead let the lights and sounds guide me to the hotspots.

What looked like a closed-up and abandoned carousel wheel, turned out to be the gorgeous Baroque-style Idolize Speigeltent! If you have no idea what that is, don’t worry, I didn't either. Once you pass the women in fish-nets and fascinators and the men in braces and bowler hats you are swallowed up by coloured lights, mirrored private booths, detailed carvings and ornate furniture. People were standing around a circular dance floor watching those brave enough to let loose and have a boogie under the shimmering of a disco ball.

Stage Fright

After interviewing Ali the Director on Triple H 100.1fm I was looking forward to seeing the show. I had a feeling that I was going to be in for a great afternoon. Ali wrote the Day the Sky Turned Black, inspired by interviews with survivors of the Black Saturday Bushfires. The show gained wide critical acclaim across the globe; so I knew she was a women that wouldn't settle for anything less than perfect; I was right.
Stage Fright is a tale of a ghost who has to scare the people in the attic otherwise he won't pass his exam and the three children will have to stay in the attic for a whole year. So, they re-intact stories to try and scare each other, the trouble is one girl is un-scarable!

Short and Sweet

Short and Sweet - Sydney's Short play festival, 180 plays showing from 4 January until 31 March. The Festival involves 300 writers and directors and almost 500 actors. This year is it's 11th year, it has seen amazing growth and following over those years.
The Festival starts with a call out to writers and Independent Theatre Companies to submit their works, these are then assessed and the plays for the Festival are carefully chosen. Directors are then invited to choose which play they would like to produce and finally the actors are auditioned and the rehearsals commence. Of course that sounds easy but can you image organising that many plays, with that many actors, the lighting, sound, props and staging?
Each week shows 10 plays and each night the audience is invited to pick the two which they enjoyed the most. The audience votes are tallied and the top two for the week are showcased in the Peoples Choice night.

The King Street Theatre (formerly the Newtown Theatre), Newtown was a buzz of excitement as the audience anticipated a night of mini performances; which of them would we love and which we would gladly never see again? We burst through to the stage to grab a seat and settle into the night.

Future Shorts

On a Tuesday night at the homely Roxbury Hotel in Glebe, a pop-up short film festival took place. Amidst a live band, a westie comedian and the distinctive buzz of after-work drinks, Future Shorts made its way to Sydney.

Future Shorts was designed to localise the culture and entertainment of a wide-scale short film festival; so that you may enjoy it in the comfort of your own neighbourhood, possibly being hosted by a friend of yours. Anyone can host the range of short films simply by becoming part of this nomadic experience.

Tuesday’s event begun with the peppy ‘Stephane Brenau’, a duo acoustic act who warmed up the assembling 20-30 year old crowd with a few covers, including a French rendition of ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’. As I snacked on an incredible selection of mixed dumplings (for only $5.00!), I noticed the excitement in the air was brewing. You could sense that those here were eager to see the first pop-up event in Sydney, eager to experience award-winning short films in an intimate environment.
